Sutil Point

The Sound swept deep around the Point,
                        piles of driftwood

splayed like fingers
                        to the sky. White boats

passed the granite sides
                        of islands opposite, pressed

the Pacific’s maw, yawning
                        to swallow the sun,

the wings of rippled clouds.
                        Before I could count

four hours slipped by–
                        forty years to forget

the dark shapes of children
                        against the silver sea.
